Ch.2
Dear Diary,
Ralph called a meeting to talk about our
progress. The meeting became crazy, and everyone was talking over each other.
Therefore, Ralph created a rule stating that we can only speak if we are
holding the conch shell. Later on in the meeting, I bring up the fact that
nobody knows that we are stuck on this island, and we may never get rescued.
The entire group becomes silent after I say this. Then, a little boy with a
mulberry colored birthmark, speaks and says that he saw a snakelike
"beastie" in the woods the previous night. We all became even more
scared than we were before. The older boys tried telling everyone that there is
no monster, and the little boy was just having a nightmare, but I'm not sure
that I believe them.
We all decide that we need to get off of
this island as soon as possible. Ralph propose that we all create a large fire
on the top of the mountain to signal any passing ships so that they know we are
trapped on the island. All of the boys liked Ralph's idea, and they ran off to
gather wood. I feel like all the other boys are being stupid, and childish,
because we are never going to get rescued off of this island. The boys finish
collecting dead wood for the fire, and they bring it to the top of the
mountain.
Ralph took my specs and used them to focus
the sunlight on the wood. It created a large fire, but it died down fast. I
yelled at the boys and told them that they need to act smarter, and more
serious if they want to get off the island, but no one really listened. They
tried again, and they got a large fire going. Everyone got excited and jumped
around singing, and they left the fire unattended, it began to spread, and it
caught a tree on fire. The boys all struggled to put out the fire. But by time
the fire is out, it is already too late and the tree is completely burnt down.
I immediately noticed that the little boy with the mulberry birthmark is
missing. Everyone blamed me and told me that if I had just watched the littluns
and took down their names, then he would still be here. However, we all decide
to act like nothing happened. After the fire, Ralph decided to assign a group
of boys to watch the fire and make sure that it doesn’t get out of control
again.
Signed,
Piggy
