Ch.8

Dear Diary,

The boys have finally returned from hunting. However, when they came back they told me how they had seen the monster. I was completely puzzled by all of their claims of seeing the beast. Then all of a sudden, Jack blew into the conch and called a meeting. In that meeting, Jack said that there is definitely a beast on the island, and that Ralph is a "coward" and he should be removed as leader of the group.

Personally, I don’t want Ralph to be removed as leader of the group. Ralph had already told Simon and I that he was thinking of resigning as leader. If Ralph resigns as leader, or if he is removed as leader by the rest of the boys then Jack will most likely become leader. If Jack becomes leader, then he will continuously pick on me, and all of the other boys will follow him and do the same. Also, all Jack wants to do is hunt, and without Ralph as leader, the only thing the group will be doing is hunting.

Luckily for me, the boys refuse to vote Ralph out of being leader. Because of this, Jack became furious. He stormed away from the group and said that he will be leaving, and whoever wanted to join him was welcome to. Ralph seemed troubled as if he didn’t know what to do. However, I was extremely excited, and thrilled that Jack was leaving.

Simon suggested that we all returned to the mountain to continue to search for the beast. The other boys seemed to be too afraid to look for the beastie. Meanwhile, Ralph slipped into a depression. I quickly cheered him up by saying that we should build a new signal fire on the beach instead of on the mountain. We all began to build a new fire, however many of the boys snuck away at night to go join Jack and his tribe. I tried to convince Ralph as best as I could that we are better off without them.

Signed,
Piggy
